Observations concerning the Cholate: Cholesterol Relationship

چکیده

The occurrence of hypercholesteremia in the nephrotic state is a long recognized phenomenon (1), but its mechanism remains to be determined. Apparently the hypercholesteremia cannot be ascribed to a primary "lipoid degeneration" of the kidney (2). Recently, studies from this laboratory (3-6) have indicated that there is a marked derangement of cholate metabolism in certain clinical and experimental states of hypercholesteremia. It therefore was considered of interest to investigate the metabolism of this particular steroid in both clinical and experimental nephrosis.

A Comparison of lhe Hypercholesleremia Produced by Biliary Obstruction with That Produced by Continuous Intravenous Injection of Cholate

Previous studies from this laboratory (1, 2) have indicated that when the cholate content of the rat 's plasma is elevated, either by biliary obstruction or by the continuous intravenous injection of cholate into normal rats, a hypercholesteremia promptly appears. Moreover, excess cholate was found in the plasma of patients suffering from various states involving hypercholesteremia (3). These f...

Mild hepatic fibrosis in cholesterol and sodium cholate diet-fed rats.

To date, the majority of research on hypercholesterolemia has focused on the effects of a high cholesterol diet on atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. The toxic effects of cholesterol on the liver and the relationship between the intake of a high cholesterol diet and hepatic fibrosis, however, have not been investigated clearly or histopathologically. Male Wistar rats were fed a diet su...

High-cholesterol diets induce changes in lipid composition of rat erythrocyte membrane including decrease in cholesterol, increase in alpha-tocopherol and changes in fatty acids of phospholipids.

Effects of high dietary cholesterol on erythrocyte membrane lipids were studied. Feeding rats with a diet containing 0.5% cholesterol and 0.15% sodium cholate for two weeks induced changes in erythrocyte membrane lipids including a decrease in cholesterol, an increase in alpha-tocopherol (alpha-Toc) and changes in the fatty acid composition of phospholipids. Oleic acid and linoleic acid increas...

Gene cluster encoding cholate catabolism in Rhodococcus spp.

Bile acids are highly abundant steroids with important functions in vertebrate digestion. Their catabolism by bacteria is an important component of the carbon cycle, contributes to gut ecology, and has potential commercial applications. We found that Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 grows well on cholate, as well as on its conjugates, taurocholate and glycocholate. The transcriptome of RHA1 growing on c...
